Andy Hepworth started brewing in Reading almost directly after University. He moved to Horsham in 1980 and within five years became the youngest Head Brewer in the country, winning many awards.
The long-standing tradition of brewing in Horsham came to an abrupt halt in 2000 with the sale of its last brewery and so Andy, determined to maintain that tradition, joined up with the key members of the brewing team in order to create Hepworths, an independent brewery aiming to build its own range of quality brands, while maintaining flexibility for contract work.
Response to the new venture was huge; finance was built from pooled redundancy payments and contributions from family and friends. The Company was established in 2000 and started production in 2001; it is constantly expanding.
Andy Hepworth, Managing Director and Head Brewer, is conscious of the part all the staff have played in the foundation and success of the Company ” You can’t build a venture of this size without total confidence in each other. Hepworths was fortunate to have a “Dream Team” right from the start. Many of us had worked together for a long while and we’ve been lucky to recruit further staff with the same commitment and loyalty”
Tim Goacher has spent most of his working life with Andy and is now Production Manager, responsible for the smooth transition from raw materials to the finished product.
John Tewson, also part of “the Dream Team” has recently retired as Chief Engineer and Phil Rush is now responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the plant.
Paul Webb is Brewing Manager, and oversees the daily brewing process.
For these four, the founders of the Company, the project has been hard work, but very rewarding.
